Rockets are among the most spectacular firecrackers produced in Sivakasi — soaring high before bursting into colour. From simple whistling rockets to multi-burst colour sky shots, Sivakasi manufacturers offer the full range at wholesale prices. Retailers and distributors across India source rockets directly from Sivakasi for Diwali, New Year, and wedding celebrations.
A streak of fire that climbs the sky — the thrill of launch in every hand.
History, chemistry, raw materials, and safety — everything you need to know.
Firework rockets are among the oldest pyrotechnic devices, with origins in Song Dynasty China (960–1279 AD). Chinese military engineers used bamboo rockets packed with gunpowder as incendiary weapons. By the 13th century, firework rockets had spread to the Arab world and Europe, where they became a staple of royal celebrations.
India has a rich history of rocket fireworks, most famously the Mysorean rockets of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan (18th century), which were the most advanced military rockets of their era. Sivakasi began producing civilian firework rockets in the 1950s, initially as simple single-stage rockets. Today, Sivakasi produces over 100 varieties of rockets, from basic 2-inch rockets to elaborate multi-stage display rockets.
Modern Sivakasi rockets use CSIR-NEERI approved compositions that reduce heavy metal content. The latest "green rockets" use potassium nitrate-based lift charges instead of perchlorate, reducing ground-level emissions. Multi-stage rockets with colour-changing effects and aerial burst finales are the latest innovations.

Step-by-step manufacturing process — from raw materials to finished product
Tube and stick preparation
Paper tubes are wound to precise specifications. Bamboo or paper sticks are cut to the correct length and straightened. The stick length determines the rocket's stability in flight.
Nozzle forming
A clay nozzle is pressed into the base of the tube. The nozzle geometry is critical — it controls the exhaust velocity and thrust. Nozzles are dried before propellant loading.
Propellant loading
PESO-licensed propellant composition is loaded into the tube in layers and compacted with a press. The propellant core is drilled to create a central channel that controls the burn rate and thrust profile.
Payload assembly
The payload (stars, crackling composition, or burst charge) is loaded above the propellant and separated by a delay fuse. The payload determines the aerial effect.
Stick attachment
The stabiliser stick is attached to the rocket tube at the correct angle and position. The stick centre of gravity must be below the rocket's centre of pressure for stable flight.
Testing & packing
Sample rockets from each batch are test-fired to verify altitude, trajectory stability, and payload effect. Approved rockets are packed in retail boxes with PESO licence details.
PESO oversight: Every manufacturing step is conducted under the supervision of the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). Factory layouts, storage quantities, and worker safety protocols are mandated by the Explosives Rules 2008 and inspected annually.
