FLOWER POT
Product Deep Dive

A cascading fountain of golden sparks — the ground display that never gets old.

Sivakasi produces over 500 million flower pots every year — more than one for every Indian household.
The "flower pot" name comes from the original clay pot casing used in 19th-century South Indian festivals.
A jumbo flower pot can produce a spark cascade up to 3 metres tall — taller than a standard doorway.

The Complete Guide

History, chemistry, raw materials, and safety — everything you need to know.

Origin

Flower pots — known as "fountains" in Western pyrotechnics — have been produced in India for over 200 years. The earliest Indian flower pots were made from clay pots packed with a slow-burning composition of charcoal, sulphur, and iron filings. The clay pot gave the product its enduring name.

India & Sivakasi

Sivakasi's flower pot industry began in the 1930s, when local manufacturers replaced clay pots with paper tubes for easier mass production. The introduction of titanium and aluminium fuels in the 1960s transformed the product — producing the brilliant silver and gold cascades that define the modern flower pot. Sivakasi now produces over 500 million flower pots annually.

Modern Era

Modern Sivakasi flower pots are available in a wide range of effects: gold sparks, silver sparks, colour-changing cascades, and crackling fountains. The latest CSIR-NEERI green flower pots use potassium nitrate instead of potassium perchlorate, reducing emissions while maintaining the spectacular visual effect.

How It's Made in Sivakasi

Step-by-step manufacturing process — from raw materials to finished product

🗞️1

Paper tube winding

Kraft paper is wound on mandrels to form the flower pot tube. The tube diameter and wall thickness determine the cascade height and duration.

🏺2

Clay plugging

A clay plug is pressed into the base of each tube to seal it. The plug is dried before the composition is loaded.

⚗️3

Composition loading

The pyrotechnic composition is loaded into the tube in layers using a press. Each layer is compacted to a precise density for consistent burn performance.

🔧4

Nozzle forming

The top of the tube is crimped or fitted with a clay nozzle to direct the spark cascade upward. The nozzle geometry is critical for cascade height and spread.

🧨5

Fuse insertion

A quick-match fuse is inserted into the nozzle and secured. The fuse length is standardised to give the user time to retreat after lighting.

📦6

Packing

Flower pots are packed in retail boxes (typically 5 or 10 pieces). Each box is labelled with the PESO licence number, batch number, and safety instructions.

🏛️

PESO oversight: Every manufacturing step is conducted under the supervision of the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). Factory layouts, storage quantities, and worker safety protocols are mandated by the Explosives Rules 2008 and inspected annually.
